Pill Taking Behaviors That Contribute to Opioid Overdose: A Qualitative and National Survey Study

Overdose is the leading cause of death for U.S. adolescents ages 14 to 18 and studies suggest some of these deaths are attributable to accidental rather than intentional exposure to fentanyl. To ensure clinical assessment tools, screening guidelines, and prevention strategies are tailored to this population, researchers at Boston Children’s Hospital will conduct a national survey of adolescents to learn how they describe pill taking behaviors and what motivates them. Project findings will be incorporated into screening and survey tools, as well as clinical guidelines to ensure youth at risk of fentanyl exposure are identified and supported.
