FORE Grant Focuses on Expanding Access to Prevention Programs in Schools
October 31, 2022Using Medicaid funding to expand access to school-based health programs is an underutilized strategy. With a $334,617 grant from FORE, the Healthy Schools Campaign, a Chicago, Ill.–based nonprofit, will provide technical assistance and educational resources to schools and states interested in leveraging Medicaid funding to offer substance use disorder (SUD) prevention and early intervention services for students and their families. These services could include screening, proactive counseling, brief interventions, peer-based counseling, and referrals as needed.
“More than one-third of the 50 million children and adolescents in U.S. schools are covered by Medicaid. Ensuring states and schools have the support they need to integrate SUD-related services into their school programs can have a big impact,” says Brian Byrd, M.P.A., FORE’s senior program officer.
